The three-part OVA series will chronicle a story taking place before Chise meets the Magus.
Chise Hatori has lived a life full of neglect and abuse, devoid of anything resembling love. Far from the warmth of family, she has had her share of troubles and pitfalls. Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers, obtains her through a slave auction, Chise's life will never be the same again.

Where it came from
The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star was produced by Wit Studio as a three-part original video animation series, released between 2016 and 2017. Serving as a prequel to the main television anime adaptation of Kore Yamazaki’s manga, this project was conceived to explore the formative years of the protagonist, Chise Hatori, before she encounters the magus Elias Ainsworth. By providing an original narrative bridge, the project allowed the studio to establish the atmospheric, melancholic aesthetic that would later define the franchise.
Directed by Norihiro Naganuma, who also handled the series composition, the OVA was crafted to emphasize the series' blend of folklore, isolation, and quiet magic. The visual direction aimed to mirror the intricate, soft-edged art style of the source material, focusing on rural landscapes and the interiority of Chise’s character. Critics and fans generally received the release as a successful tonal introduction to the world, praised for its high production values and its ability to capture the contemplative pacing of the manga’s early chapters.
