Less than a century ago a meteor collided with the planet's surface and the resulting disaster caused the next generation of humanity to develop a wide variety of amazing abilities. In the center of the meteor's crater lies Rikka, a system of six academies known as the Asterisk. Ayato Amagiri enters the Asterisk as a transfer student hoping to compete in a special battle event known as the Festa. However, he quickly finds himself on the bad side of one of the strongest fighters around—the beautiful but fiery Julis-Alexa von Riessfeld. To stand against her he'll have to rely on his own sword-wielding ability, but when the tables turn, will they be able to team up to take down the competition?

Where it came from
The Asterisk War, known in Japan as Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, is a light novel adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures that debuted its second season in 2016. The series is set in a future where a catastrophic event known as Invertia has reshaped the world, leading to the rise of Genestella—individuals with enhanced physical abilities—who compete in a high-stakes entertainment tournament called the Festa. This season continues the narrative arc following Ayato Amagiri as he navigates the complex social and combat dynamics of the Seidoukan Academy.
The design of the series reflects the signature aesthetic of A-1 Pictures during the mid-2010s, emphasizing fluid action choreography and stylized character designs typical of the battle-harem genre. The animation direction sought to balance the frenetic pace of the tournament battles with the lighter, character-driven moments of school life. While it received a standard critical reception for its genre, it remains noted by collectors as a representative example of the studio's technical output during a prolific period for light novel adaptations.
