For the second time, the masked storyteller returns to tell children tales and legends of horror and woe, such as the tale of a ventriloquist's dummy, a locker that grants wishes, a capsule toy machine that returns lost possessions, and a strange food called Ominie-san.
Building on the foundation that was laid by the first, Yami Shibai 2 is a collection of Japanese scary stories of the unknown and the occult that are truly terrifying, narrated in a style of art that mimics kamishibai storytelling.

Where it came from
Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 2 was produced by ILCA in 2014 as a direct continuation of the first season of the experimental horror anthology series. The series draws heavily from the traditional Japanese art of kamishibai, a form of street theater storytelling that originated in the 1930s where performers used illustrated paper scrolls to narrate tales to gathered audiences. This revival aimed to modernize the format by utilizing digital animation techniques that mimic the look of these original, eerie paper illustrations.
The series was designed to evoke a sense of urban dread, focusing on short, punchy ghost stories rooted in Japanese folklore and contemporary urban legends. It was directed by Takashi Taniguchi with character designs by various artists aiming to maintain a distinct, somewhat unsettling aesthetic. Upon its release, the second season was received as a niche but effective entry in the horror genre, noted for its commitment to a lo-fi, authentic storytelling atmosphere that contrasts sharply with mainstream, high-budget anime productions.
