Where it came from
The Buried Tree Devil, known in Chinese as Mai Shu Yao, was produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures as a segment within the 2017 anthology series The Girl with the Dog's Eyes. This ONA project emerged during a period of significant investment by Tencent into domestic animation, aimed at adapting internet literature into high-quality digital short-form content for their streaming platforms.
The series is noted for its experimental visual style, drawing heavily from contemporary Chinese dark fantasy aesthetics and surrealist storytelling traditions. While the individual segments, including The Buried Tree Devil, were produced by various animation studios under the Tencent umbrella, they were collectively praised by critics for their atmospheric world-building and departure from more traditional, kid-centric domestic animation tropes.
