Where it came from
The Creatures From Planet 66: Roppongi Hills Story was produced by Toei Animation as a promotional special tied to the development and opening of the Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo. Released in 2003, the project served as an imaginative marketing tool to introduce the public to the high-profile urban development through a narrative lens, blending the studio's signature animation style with the futuristic aesthetic of the new district.
The character designs and visual direction were crafted to integrate seamlessly with the modern, sleek architecture of Roppongi Hills. By utilizing the city itself as a backdrop for a science fiction narrative, Toei aimed to frame the commercial space as a hub of innovation and wonder. Upon release, the special was noted primarily for its role as a branded experimental piece, serving as a curious intersection between corporate promotional branding and traditional Japanese animation.
