Where it came from
The Dark Myth, released as an original video animation (OVA) in 1990 by Studio Ajiado, emerged during a peak period for occult-themed horror anime in the late eighties and early nineties. The production was adapted from a serialized manga series, reflecting the industry's trend of mining dark fantasy source material to appeal to an older demographic seeking mature, supernatural storytelling outside of television broadcast constraints.
The animation was characterized by the moody, stark aesthetic typical of Ajiado's early output, aiming to translate the intense atmosphere of the original source material into a gothic visual style. While the work garnered a dedicated cult following among genre enthusiasts for its visceral imagery and experimental narrative pacing, it remained a niche title that served as a hallmark of the era's uninhibited creative approach to horror.
