Where it came from
The Deer King, released in 2022, is an animated feature film produced by the acclaimed studio Production I.G. Based on the Japanese fantasy novel series by Nahoko Uehashi, the film was directed by Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji. Ando, who is renowned for his work as a character designer and animation director on Ghibli classics like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, sought to bring a grounded, humanistic touch to the complex world-building and epidemiological themes presented in the source material.
The film emerged during a challenging period for global cinema, arriving in theaters as the world grappled with its own real-world pandemic, which added a poignant layer of resonance to its narrative about a mysterious illness sweeping through an empire. While the adaptation was praised for its lush, painterly backgrounds and ambitious scope, it faced critical debate regarding its condensation of Uehashi’s dense two-volume novel into a single feature-length runtime. Nevertheless, it remains a notable entry in the studio’s portfolio for its earnest attempt to translate intricate high-fantasy literature into a visual medium.
