When Yuuko Yoshida wakes up one morning to discover that she’s sprouted horns and a tail, she learns something that her mother has been meaning to tell her. You know that battle between the Light and Dark that’s been going on since the dawn of time? Well, Yuuko’s family are the bad guys.
So now, Yuuko has to defeat a local magical girl to win back some of her family’s vanquished power so they can afford to go to the all-you-can-eat pancake restaurant. And, of course, it turns out that the Magical Girl goes to Yuuko’s school, but Momo’s really nice and keeps rescuing Yuuko, which is pretty embarrassing and leaves Yuuko rather conflicted… but… all you can eat pancakes?

Where it came from
The Demon Girl Next Door, known in Japan as Machikado Mazoku, began as a manga series by Izumo Ito before being adapted into a television anime by the studio J.C.Staff in 2019. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in genre-bending comedies that subvert traditional magical girl tropes by focusing on the mundane, everyday domestic struggles of its protagonist, Yuko Yoshida, who finds herself tasked with defeating a local magical girl to restore her family's fortune.
The animation direction by Hiroaki Sakurai and the character designs by Mai Otsuka aimed to capture the series' signature blend of slapstick humor and heartfelt character dynamics. The adaptation was well received by audiences for its comedic timing and charming visual style, successfully translating Ito's manga aesthetic into a vibrant, high-energy format that emphasizes the unexpected bond between the lead demon and her rival.
