This spin-off of the Haruhi Suzumiya series takes place in the world of the "Disappearance" arc of the original novels, focusing on the high school life (and romance!) of a tentative and bashful Yuki Nagato quite unlike the one you've come to know and love through the usual exploits of the SOS Brigade... but no less charming!
As the shy head of the Literature Club, Nagato has had a hard time recruiting members. Her close friend Ryoko Asakura supports her in this. Drafting Kyon, she eventually meets up with Haruhi Suzumiya, Tsuruya, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi, and has to put up with their hijinks while trying to romance Kyon. Asakura seems ambivalent about the latter prospect.

Where it came from
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan was produced by the studio Satelight and aired in 2015 as a spin-off of the highly influential Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. Originating as a manga series by Puyo, the work functions as an alternate-universe retelling that shifts the focus from the original series' supernatural narrative to a grounded, slice-of-life romantic comedy centered on the character Yuki Nagato.
The animation design sought to provide a softer, more intimate aesthetic compared to the original Kyoto Animation productions, aiming to emphasize the quiet, emotive transformation of its titular protagonist. While it was received as a charming character study by fans of the source material, it remains a distinct entry in the franchise that prioritized atmosphere and character development over the reality-bending spectacle of its predecessor.
