Rich heiress Reiko Hosho lives a double life as a novice detective, fighting crime under Inspector Kazamatsuri—also from a wealthy family. After work, Reiko sheds her pantsuit to don a lovely dress for dinner each day. Difficult cases force her to confide in her butler Kageyama, who proceeds to savagely ridicule her inability to solve mysteries, all while brilliantly unraveling each case himself.

Where it came from
The Dinner Table Detective, released by the renowned animation studio Madhouse in 2025, represents a modern foray into the character-driven mystery genre. Developed as a seasonal television series, it captures the studio's long-standing commitment to sharp, fluid character animation and atmospheric world-building. The project was conceived to explore the tension of domestic settings as prime locations for complex human drama, positioning the dining room as a stage for interpersonal unraveling.
The show's visual identity leans into a clean, contemporary aesthetic, prioritizing subtle facial expressions and meticulous framing over elaborate action sequences. By focusing on intimate environmental storytelling, the design team sought to ground the narrative in realism while maintaining the polished, high-fidelity look synonymous with recent Madhouse productions. It has been noted by critics for its deliberate pacing and its reliance on psychological cues rather than overt melodrama.
