The Eccentric Family 2

The Eccentric Family 2, known in Japan as Uchouten Kazoku 2, was produced by P.A.WORKS and released in 2017 as the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2013 anime series. Based on the novel series by Tomihiko Morimi, the show expands upon the whimsical and melancholic lives of the Shimogamo family, a clan of tanuki living secretly among humans in Kyoto. The series was created to conclude the narrative arcs established in Morimi's source material, maintaining the distinct visual style of the first season while delving deeper into the complex political structure of the tanuki, tengu, and human societies.

The production team, led by director Masayuki Yoshihara, aimed to capture the ethereal atmosphere of Kyoto through meticulously detailed backgrounds and a vibrant, illustrative color palette that mimics traditional Japanese aesthetics. Character designs were based on original concepts by Koji Kumeta, who brought a unique, spindly aesthetic to the supernatural cast. The series was well-received by critics for its sophisticated storytelling and its ability to balance lighthearted comedy with profound meditations on grief, family legacy, and the nature of the soul.
