Where it came from
The Elusive Samurai is a 2024 television series produced by the studio CloverWorks, based on the popular manga series written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui. The narrative centers on Hojo Tokiyuki, a young boy who survives the betrayal of his clan and flees into the wilderness during the Kamakura period. Matsui's original work is noted for its distinctive blend of historical drama and absurdist humor, providing a unique foundation for the animation team to explore.
Under the direction of Yuta Yamazaki, the CloverWorks production sought to translate the manga's fluid, expressive art style into a dynamic animated format. The series received significant critical attention for its vibrant visual direction and its unconventional approach to the historical samurai genre, successfully balancing the weight of political upheaval with the protagonist's resilient and lighthearted nature.
