Where it came from
The 2024 anime adaptation of The Fable brings Katsuhisa Minami’s acclaimed seinen manga to the screen under the production of Tezuka Productions. The original manga, serialized in Weekly Young Magazine from 2014 to 2019, centers on a legendary hitman known as 'Fable' who is ordered by his boss to take a one-year hiatus from killing and live a normal life in Osaka. This narrative shift serves as a dark comedy exploration of the absurdities inherent in transitioning from a hyper-competent assassin to a mundane civilian.
The television series is directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, a veteran of the industry known for his work on high-stakes dramas. The visual direction emphasizes the distinct tonal balance between the protagonist’s stoic, cold-blooded efficiency and the chaotic, colorful eccentricities of Osaka’s underworld. Upon its release, the adaptation was noted for its faithful translation of Minami’s specific character humor and the tension of the source material, positioning it as a significant entry in modern crime-comedy animation.
