Where it came from
The Everyday Tales of a Cat God, known in Japan as Nekogami Yaoyorozu, premiered in 2011 as a television anime series produced by the studio AIC Plus+. Based on the manga series by Flaptoy, the story centers on Mayu, a feline deity who is banished from heaven and forced to live in a modern-day antique shop. The production emerged during a period of high popularity for the slice-of-life comedy genre, blending supernatural elements with domestic storytelling to explore themes of friendship and adjustment to mortal life.
The character designs were overseen by Yoko Sawa, who aimed to emphasize the cute, anthropomorphic aesthetic central to the series' charm. The show was produced for the AT-X network and sought to capture an audience appreciative of lighthearted character interactions and Japanese folklore. Upon its release, the series was received as a standard entry in the light comedy genre, noted primarily for its whimsical premise and the visual style characteristic of its production era.
