After escaping a violent encounter, Touko finds herself lost in the chaos of a city under invasion by Spiders, a tribe of people with dangerous supernatural abilities. Touko has traveled to the city intending to return the possessions of Haijuu, a fire hunter who died protecting her. She is aided by Haijuu's dog, Kanata, and Akira, a fire hunter who has protected her on her journey so far. When Akira is drawn away by an important task, Touko is swept into the battle's confusion to begin a new journey of her own.
Meanwhile, Haijuu's son Koushi fights to defend the city. Though physically unremarkable, Koushi's ingenuity has aided in the development of a few useful weapons. These include a powerful cannon capable of casting down ungodly lightning to smite the invading forces. With such destructive force seen as an offense to the gods, the deity Hibari seeks to stop him.
As they are both drawn into the unraveling plans of scheming gods and humans alike, Touko and Koushi struggle to survive.

Where it came from
The Fire Hunter, or Hikari no Ou, is an anime series produced by Signal.MD based on the fantasy novel series by Rieko Hinata. The second season, broadcast in 2024 via the WOWOW network, serves as the continuation of the post-apocalyptic narrative set in a world where humans spontaneously combust in the presence of natural fire, forcing society to rely on the flame-harvesting efforts of specialized hunters. The series was directed by Junji Nishimura, who aimed to preserve the dense world-building and philosophical themes of Hinata’s original literature.
The visual aesthetic of the series is defined by the character designs of Takuya Saito, who sought to capture the distinct, textured style of Akihiro Yamada’s original illustrations. While the production faced scrutiny regarding its animation quality and pacing compared to the source material, the second season was received as a definitive conclusion to the story arcs established in the initial run, grounding its fantasy elements in a somber exploration of humanity’s relationship with technology and survival.
