The Flying Luna Clipper

The Flying Luna Clipper was produced in 1987 as a standalone original video animation, or OVA, during the burgeoning era of Japanese direct-to-video releases. Directed by Osamu Tezuka—the legendary manga artist often referred to as the godfather of anime—the project served as a whimsical, science-fiction interpretation of the classic Wizard of Oz narrative, transposed into a futuristic space-faring setting.

The film's visual design bears the signature rounded, expressive aesthetic synonymous with Tezuka's later works. While it was not as widely distributed internationally as his earlier television series, it remains a notable footnote in the history of his studio, Mushi Production. Its reception was largely defined by its experimental blend of traditional fantasy tropes with 1980s space-opera motifs, securing its place as a curiosity among dedicated animation collectors.
