Where it came from
The Gakuen Choujotai, or School Girls' Super Squad, was released as a two-part original video animation in 1991. Produced by Studio Magic Bus, it emerged during a peak era for the direct-to-video market in Japan, where studios frequently experimented with genre-blending narratives. The project leaned heavily into the popular aesthetic of early 90s action-comedy anime, utilizing a premise that centered on high-school-aged protagonists tasked with extraordinary duties, a common trope designed to appeal to adolescent audiences of the time.
The animation and character designs for the series were handled by a team at Magic Bus, a studio known for its versatility in the independent OVA market. The production sought to balance lighthearted school-life character dynamics with supernatural-adjacent action sequences. Upon release, the series was received as a niche entry in the industry, noted more for its participation in the stylistic trends of the early 1990s rather than for groundbreaking animation techniques or a lasting critical legacy.
