The main character, Yuuki Manabu (20 years old), carrying on his dead Father and Brother`s will, joined SDF (Space Defense Force) to protect the safety of the Galaxy Railways. SDF, in order to uphold the reputation of maintaining the best transportation schedules within the Universe, deals with accidents, natural disasters, rescue operations, space pirates along all lines of the railway. Layla Destiny Shura is a mysterious beauty unifying SDF and all lines on The Galaxy Railways.

However, appearances of those who uses evil powers to change the destinies of these travelers triggers another of her hidden ability. "Destiny is changed by the individual`s oneself. Where it came from
The Galaxy Railways was produced by Studio Leiji Matsumoto and animated by Xebec to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Matsumoto's career. Conceived as a spiritual successor to his earlier space-faring masterpieces, the series centers on the Space Defense Force and the sprawling, interstellar train network that defines his creative universe. It was designed to evoke a sense of nostalgic wonder, blending the aesthetic of steam-era locomotive travel with vast, melancholic space exploration.
Upon its release in 2003, the series was licensed by Funimation for North American distribution, introducing a new generation to Matsumoto's signature visual style. The character designs and mechanical concepts were heavily influenced by his recurring themes of destiny, duty, and the bittersweet nature of journeying through the stars. While it faced comparisons to its predecessors like Galaxy Express 999, it was received as a respectful, atmospheric homage that maintained the philosophical depth characteristic of Matsumoto's world-building.
