Where it came from
The Gymnastics Samurai, known in Japan as Taiso Samurai, was produced by Studio MAPPA and premiered in 2020 as an original television anime series. Conceived during a period of significant growth for the studio, the project focused on a grounded, character-driven narrative centered on Jotaro Aragaki, a veteran gymnast struggling with his career and personal life, rather than the high-fantasy or action-heavy genres often associated with the studio's portfolio.
The series was directed by Hisatoshi Shimizu with series composition by Shigeru Murakoshi, aiming to blend human drama with the technical nuances of competitive gymnastics. The design philosophy emphasized a warm, mid-century aesthetic that reflected the 2002 setting of the show. Upon its release, it was noted by critics for its heartfelt storytelling and unique departure from traditional sports anime tropes, though it remained a niche title within MAPPA’s broader, more commercially explosive catalog.
