The Heike Story

The Heike Story, released as an ONA in 2021, was produced by the studio Science SARU and directed by Naoko Yamada. It serves as a modern adaptation of the 12th-century epic The Tale of the Heike, a cornerstone of Japanese literature that chronicles the rise and fall of the Taira clan. The production sought to recontextualize this dense historical narrative through the eyes of an original character, Biwa, a wandering musician gifted with prophetic sight, effectively bridging the gap between classical epic poetry and contemporary animation aesthetics.

The series is celebrated for its distinctive visual language, characterized by a fluid, impressionistic art style that departs from traditional anime conventions. Yamada worked alongside art director Tomotaka Kubo to craft a color palette and composition style inspired by traditional Japanese painting, aiming to evoke a sense of inevitable tragedy and fleeting beauty. Upon its release, the work received critical acclaim for its lyrical pacing, emotional depth, and Kensuke Ushio’s evocative score, securing its place as a significant artistic contribution to the studio's portfolio.
