THE IDOLM@STER Side M

The Idolm@ster SideM anime series was released in 2017 as an adaptation of the social simulation game developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Produced by A-1 Pictures, the series follows the stories of various men who leave their previous careers—ranging from lawyers and doctors to pilots—to become idols at 315 Production. This premise was designed to explore themes of career transition and the pursuit of dreams at different stages of adult life, distinguishing itself from the franchise's earlier focus on younger, aspiring performers.

Under the direction of Takahiro Harada and Miyuki Kuroki, the series aimed to balance character-driven narrative with the bright, high-energy aesthetic typical of the idol genre. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the established franchise for its faithful character portrayals and the expansion of the SideM universe. Critics often noted that while the show adhered to standard idol tropes, the maturity of its cast allowed for a more grounded narrative regarding professional development and teamwork.
