April 2095. A century has passed since magic was established as actual technology. The two siblings enroll at a prestigious school for magicians called the National Magic University Affiliated First High School, better known as “Magic High School.” Tatsuya, the older brother, is an “irregular” with a fatal flaw to his magic powers. The younger sister, Miyuki, is a star student with unmatched magical talent.
Though they are now close enough to be mistaken as a couple, just a few years ago, the two had a dysfunctional relationship, where they were nothing more than a master and servant. One incident, however, alters their relationship forever. Three years ago in Okinawa, an unforgettable experience turns their souls and destinies on their heads.

Where it came from
The Irregular at Magic High School: Reminiscence Arc was released in 2022 as a special television anime adaptation produced by Studio 8-bit. It serves as a prequel to the main series, specifically covering the events of volume eight of the original light novel series written by Tsutomu Sato. The project was conceived to provide deeper narrative context regarding the past of the protagonist, Tatsuya Shiba, and his sister Miyuki, detailing the pivotal Okinawa incident that shaped their cold, pragmatic outlook on the world.
The design and animation were handled by the 8-bit creative team, who maintained the aesthetic continuity established in earlier seasons while emphasizing a more somber, atmospheric tone suitable for the flashback narrative. The production was intended to bridge gaps for viewers following the series' complex geopolitical and magical systems, focusing on the emotional development of the leads. Upon release, it was received as a necessary character study that offered fans a clearer understanding of the trauma and familial expectations defining the Shiba siblings.
