Where it came from
The Legend of the Sacred Stone, released in 2000, was the first feature-length film produced by Pili International Multimedia. It marked a significant evolution for the Pili studio, which had built its reputation over decades as a television pioneer in Taiwan using traditional glove puppetry. The production was intended to showcase the potential of their intricate, handcrafted puppets on the big screen, bridging the gap between historical cultural performance and modern cinematic spectacle.
The film was directed by Chris Huang, a key figure in the Pili creative dynasty, who sought to integrate elaborate special effects and dynamic camera work into the established puppet aesthetic. The narrative draws from the complex mythology and martial arts traditions central to the Pili universe, emphasizing ornate costumes and highly detailed prop work. Upon its release, it was noted for its ambition and helped elevate the public profile of puppetry as a serious medium for fantasy storytelling in Taiwan.
