The Biography of Budori Gusko was the recipient of numerous awards including the Monbusho Selection. The original novella on which the film is based is one of Kenji Miyazawa's more famous works, alongside Matasaburo the Wind Imp, Gauche the Cellist and Night on the Galactic Railroad. The story follows the life of a young boy named Gusuko who lives in the countryside with his parents and little sister. A string of droughts and other natural disasters tear the family apart, and Gusuko is forced to leave home and seek his fortunes on his own. Driven by a desire to improve the quality of life of his poor countrymen, he eventually joins a group of scientists called the Iihatov Volcano Department, and there takes part in scientific projects to fight the natural disasters that drove him from his home.

Where it came from
The Life of Guskou Budori, released in 1994, is a feature-length animated adaptation of the 1932 classic children's novel by Kenji Miyazawa. Produced by Bandai Visual and animated by the studio Group TAC, the film serves as a poignant exploration of themes common to Miyazawa’s work, including ecological consciousness, sacrifice, and the struggle for survival in a changing landscape. It was created to honor the enduring legacy of one of Japan’s most beloved literary figures, translating his lyrical prose into a visual medium that reflects the pastoral yet melancholic aesthetic of early 20th-century Tohoku.
The design and artistic direction of the film were heavily influenced by the period’s traditional Japanese animation techniques, aiming for a hand-painted, storybook quality that echoed the rustic, fantastical atmosphere of the original source material. While it did not achieve the widespread commercial visibility of later adaptations, it is well-regarded by scholars and enthusiasts of Miyazawa’s work for its faithful, contemplative pacing and its commitment to the author’s philosophical intent. Its release remains a significant entry in the canon of literary-inspired anime from the 1990s.
