Synopsis

Young forest pixies Belfy and Lillibit live in an old-fashioned lilliputian village deep in the forest. Lillibit lives with his parents and younger sister, whom he tends to give the slip in order to run off in search of fun. Belfy resides with the village doctor since being placed in his care as a baby under unusual circumstances that even Belfy herself is unaware of. The two friends have adventures and learn valuable life lessons while helping out their fellow villagers and the animals of the forest.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Littl' Bits, known in Japan as Mori no Yōki na Kobito-tachi: Berufi to Rirubitto, was produced by Tatsunoko Production and premiered in 1980. The series was an adaptation of the work of American artist Rien Poortvliet and Dutch author Wil Huygen, specifically their popular 1976 book Gnomes. The production sought to capture the whimsical, nature-focused aesthetic of the original illustrations, translating the cozy, forest-dwelling life of the creatures into an animated format suitable for a family audience.

The design of the series reflects the signature style of Tatsunoko, focusing on character-driven stories centered on harmony with nature. Upon its international release, the show gained traction as part of a broader wave of European-influenced children's animation. While it maintained a modest cult following compared to the studio's more action-oriented hits like Gatchaman, the show is fondly remembered for its gentle tone and faithful artistic homage to the intricate visual detail of the source material.
