The Little Match Girl

This production of The Little Match Girl was released by the Japanese publisher Gakken, a company historically focused on educational materials, children’s books, and specialized audiovisual media. The film was created as part of an initiative to bring classic European fairy tales to life for a young Japanese audience, drawing upon the melancholic and moralistic tone of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1845 original story. By framing the narrative through an animated lens, Gakken aimed to make the stark themes of poverty and loss accessible while maintaining the artistic sensitivity inherent in the source material.

The design of this film is characteristic of Gakken’s mid-20th-century aesthetic, which often prioritized soft, expressive line work and a subdued color palette to evoke the cold, wintry atmosphere of the tale. The animators focused on the visual contrast between the desolate streets and the warm, fleeting visions ignited by the girl’s matches. While it was intended for educational and home viewing rather than theatrical competition, the work is recognized by collectors as a distinct example of the period's Japanese approach to adapting Western literature, valued for its earnest storytelling and technical simplicity.
