Where it came from
The Reflection was conceived as a collaborative project between Stan Lee, the legendary comic book creator, and Hiroshi Nagahama, a director known for his atmospheric work on series like Mushishi. Released in 2017, the series emerged from a desire to blend the sensibilities of American superhero comic book aesthetics with the narrative structure and animation style of Japanese anime. The story follows the aftermath of a global event that bestowed supernatural abilities upon various individuals, exploring how these people navigate a world forever changed by their newfound powers.
The visual design of the series was heavily influenced by the distinct illustrative techniques of traditional American comics, utilizing bold lines and a saturated color palette that stood out within the contemporary anime landscape. Produced by Studio DEEN, the show aimed to bridge cultural storytelling traditions, though its experimental visual direction and pacing received a polarized reception from both critics and fans. While it remains a niche entry in the canon of international collaborations, it is often noted for its ambition in attempting to synthesize two vastly different artistic media.
