Where it came from
The Rising of the Shield Hero anime adaptation was produced by Studio Kinema Citrus and premiered in 2019. It is based on the popular light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi, which gained initial traction as a web novel on the platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The narrative follows Naofumi Iwatani, who is summoned to a parallel world as one of four heroes tasked with protecting the kingdom of Melromarc from apocalyptic waves, only to be betrayed and forced to adapt to a hostile environment.
The series design team, led by director Takao Abo, aimed to emphasize the protagonist's sense of isolation and the tactical, grit-focused nature of his unique fighting style. The character designs were adapted for animation by Masahiro Suwa, who sought to translate the distinct visual cues of the original light novel illustrations into a cohesive television format. Upon release, the series became a notable entry in the isekai genre, drawing attention for its darker, progression-focused tone and its central premise regarding the protagonist’s ostracization.
