With another Wave happening in a week, Naofumi Iwatani and his party have no time to waste. However, when bat familiars raid Lurolona Village and the Wave countdown comes to a halt, the Four Cardinal Heroes reconvene with the queen, Mirelia Q Melromarc, for a quick briefing. The queen presumes that the odd occurrences are linked to the Spirit Tortoise—a threatening creature that has awakened from its slumber, back to cause havoc once again. A plan to put the Spirit Tortoise to rest is devised—but out of the four men, only the cursed Shield Hero agrees to help.

Where it came from
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 was produced by studio Kinema Citrus and premiered in 2022, serving as a direct continuation of the anime adaptation of Aneko Yusagi's popular light novel series. This season was developed to adapt the Spirit Tortoise arc, a pivotal narrative sequence that follows the protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani, as he navigates the complex political and magical challenges of a foreign land. The production aimed to expand upon the high-fantasy world-building established in the first season, focusing on the tactical evolution of the Shield Hero's abilities.
The design and animation direction for this season faced significant challenges regarding pacing and stylistic consistency as the series transitioned into its new story arc. While the studio sought to maintain the dark, progression-based aesthetic of the original source material, the season's reception was marked by discussions among fans regarding the compression of the source text. Despite these debates, the season remains a critical entry in the franchise's history for how it deepened the lore concerning the Four Cardinal Heroes and the ongoing threat of the waves of calamity.
