Where it came from
The Snack World: Hitogirai no Lenny, or Lenny the Misanthrope, was produced by OLM in 2016 as a pilot film for the broader Snack World franchise. This multimedia project was conceived by Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino to explore a cross-media landscape blending high fantasy tropes with modern, consumer-driven humor. The short was intended to establish the visual identity and irreverent tone of the world, utilizing a distinctive cel-shaded animation style that leans into the series' game-like aesthetic.
The design and narrative approach reflect a deliberate effort to subvert traditional heroic quest motifs, focusing on comedic absurdity and contemporary character archetypes. Directed by industry veteran Yuji Asada, the project was received as an experimental proof of concept for the subsequent television series and handheld gaming titles. It stands as a significant artifact of Level-5’s strategy to synchronize animation, gaming, and merchandise lines through a unified aesthetic.
