Where it came from
The Story of Saiunkoku Second Series was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse and released in 2007. Serving as the direct continuation of the first series, this adaptation brought Sai Yukino's light novel series to life, further exploring the intricate political intrigue and character development set within the fictional empire of Sai. The production aimed to maintain the balance between court drama and lighthearted elements that defined the initial season, reflecting the studio's reputation for high-quality character designs and lush, atmospheric world-building.
The design and aesthetic direction were carefully curated to honor the original light novel illustrations by Kairi Yura. The visual team focused on capturing the period-inspired courtly setting, utilizing a distinct color palette to differentiate the power dynamics of the imperial court. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans of the josei genre, praised for its depth in storytelling and the consistency of its animation quality, which helped solidify the franchise's place in the mid-2000s anime landscape.
