Where it came from
Released in 1992 as a six-part original video animation series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again was intended to serve as a direct sequel to the original 1982 television series. Produced by Bandai Visual, AIC, and Oniro, the project emerged during a period of experimentation within the anime industry, where high-budget OVA formats allowed creators to explore alternate timelines or follow-up narratives independent of the main franchise creator, Shoji Kawamori.
The series is noted for its updated mechanical designs and a focus on the Zentradi culture, departing from the established canon of the original show. While it featured polished animation quality standard for the era, it received a mixed reception from fans who felt it diverged too significantly from the tone and continuity of the original series. Over time, it has been relegated to an alternate universe status within the broader Macross franchise, remaining an intriguing historical artifact of the studio's early 1990s aesthetic.
