Where it came from
Released in 1987 as an original video animation, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 serves as a visual epilogue to the original television series. Produced by Artland and directed by Shoji Kawamori, the project was conceived as a music video compilation rather than a traditional narrative sequel. It utilizes high-quality animation to frame a collection of songs performed by Minmay, the series' iconic idol character, effectively capturing the emotional conclusion of the Macross story through the lens of a farewell concert.
The production design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-eighties anime boom, emphasizing fluid character animation and intricate mecha detail. By weaving together new footage with repurposed scenes from the series and the feature film, Do You Remember Love?, the OVA was designed to provide closure for fans of the franchise. It was received as a nostalgic retrospective, notable for its innovative integration of music and animation, which helped solidify the cultural status of the Macross idol music genre.
