When a college dropout stops for a late night bite at a mysterious ramen stand, he crosses paths with a self-proclaimed deity of matrimony. This bizarre meeting sends the young man hurtling through a horrifying flashback to his not-so-glorious college days when the influence of a cruel new friend turned him from a hopeless romantic into a mischievous “black cupid.”

Where it came from
The Tatami Galaxy was produced by Studio Madhouse in 2010 as an adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi's 2004 novel. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa, the series was conceived as a stylistically bold exploration of the circular nature of student life and the paralysis caused by an abundance of choices. It emerged during a period when experimental aesthetics were gaining ground in late-night television, utilizing a distinct color palette and rapid-fire dialogue to capture the protagonist's frantic mental state.
The visual design, overseen by character designer Yusuke Nakamura, leans into flat, high-contrast compositions and unconventional perspectives to emphasize the protagonist's subjective reality. Upon release, the series was critically lauded for its artistic ingenuity and unconventional narrative structure, eventually becoming the first television anime to win the grand prize in the animation division at the Japan Media Arts Festival. It has since secured a reputation as a landmark work in contemporary Japanese animation.
