Where it came from
The Tale of Outcasts, an anime series produced by Ashi Productions and directed by Yasutaka Yamamoto, debuted in 2023. It is based on the manga series by Makoto Hoshino, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 2019 to 2021. The narrative is set in the late nineteenth-century British Empire, blending historical atmosphere with supernatural folklore, and focuses on the bond between an orphaned girl and an immortal demon.
The series was designed to emphasize a Victorian Gothic aesthetic, utilizing character designs that balance the melancholy of the era with the series' dark fantasy elements. Critically, the adaptation was noted for its focus on character-driven storytelling rather than action, drawing favorable comparisons to period-piece dramas. It was received as a heartfelt exploration of companionship, reflecting the series' original intent to portray mutual salvation between societal outcasts.
