Where it came from
The Thousand Musketeers originated as a mobile game developed by Marvelous, released in 2018, before being adapted into an anime series by TMS Entertainment later that year. The project centered on a high-fantasy premise where humanity is liberated from a tyrannical empire through the manifestation of 'noble spirits' embodied as antique firearms. This concept leveraged the popular anthropomorphic character trope common in contemporary Japanese media, focusing on historical weaponry as the foundation for its cast of protagonists.
The character designs were overseen by Kinoshita Yuuki, who utilized a distinct aesthetic to distinguish each 'Musketeer' based on the specific historical era and origin of their respective firearms. While the production aimed to appeal to fans of character-driven multimedia franchises, the anime was received as a standard adaptation, noted for its emphasis on the relationship between the firearms' spirits and their masters within a stylized, war-torn setting.
