Where it came from
The Witch and the Beast originated as a manga series by Kousuke Satake, first serialized in 2016, before being adapted into a twelve-episode television anime series by Yokohama Animation Lab in early 2024. The story emerged from the dark fantasy genre, blending elements of grim fairy tales with neo-noir detective tropes, centering on a cursed woman and her companion as they traverse a world filled with magic and retribution.
The animation production aimed to capture Satake’s distinctive gothic aesthetic, characterized by sharp character designs and a moody, atmospheric visual style. While the adaptation sought to translate the manga's intense action sequences and intricate lore into motion, its reception was tempered by varying opinions on the pacing and the technical execution of the studio's stylistic choices, reflecting the challenges of condensing dense source material for a television format.
