The World Ends with You The Animation

The World Ends with You The Animation was produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Domerica in 2021, serving as an adaptation of the acclaimed 2007 Nintendo DS action role-playing game. Development of the series aimed to bridge the gap for new audiences while satisfying longtime fans, adapting the distinctive Shibuya-set narrative where the protagonist, Neku Sakuraba, is forced to participate in a life-or-death competition known as the Reapers' Game. The project was conceived to capture the game's unique urban fantasy aesthetic and high-energy electronic soundtrack for a television medium.

The visual design of the series sought to replicate the iconic, edgy character art popularized by Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi in the original source material. By balancing 2D character animation with 3D background elements, the studio intended to reflect the frantic, stylized energy of the game's Shibuya setting. Upon its release, the adaptation was received as a faithful but condensed retelling of the game's complex plot, often noted for its attempts to translate the game's proprietary touch-based combat mechanics into a coherent visual language for screen storytelling.
