Thermae Romae Novae

Thermae Romae Novae was released in 2022 as an original net animation series produced by Studio NAZ for Netflix. The series serves as an expansion and reimagining of the original Thermae Romae manga by Mari Yamazaki, which famously bridged the gap between ancient Roman history and contemporary Japanese bathing culture. By introducing new episodes alongside the classic narrative, the show explores how Lucius Modestus, a Roman architect, continues to find inspiration for his bath designs through his involuntary travels to modern Japan.

The animation style and direction were handled by Tetsuya Tatamitani, who sought to blend the historical gravitas of the Roman Empire with the lighthearted, fish-out-of-water comedy that defined the original series. The production aimed to provide educational insights into the evolution of bathing technologies while maintaining a whimsical tone. Upon its release, it was well-received for its unique premise and the humorous juxtaposition of Lucius's stoic Roman sensibilities against the backdrop of modern Japanese technological innovation.
