This Ugly Yet Beautiful World

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, known in Japan as Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai, was produced by the acclaimed studio Gainax and aired in 2004. The series emerged during a period of experimentation for the studio, following their foundational work on iconic titles like Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was conceived as a collaborative project, blending the studio's signature character-driven drama with science fiction elements, centering on a mysterious entity discovered in the woods and the subsequent coming-of-age journey of the protagonists.

The series was directed by Shouji Saeki, who sought to explore the complex dichotomy of beauty and ugliness in human nature and physical reality. The visual aesthetic reflects the early 2000s transition toward digital animation production in Japan, utilizing a blend of traditional cel-like character designs and atmospheric background art. Upon its release, the show received a varied reception, noted by critics for its ambitious thematic scope and its position as a transitional piece within the Gainax catalog, balancing lighthearted school-life tropes with more somber, existential inquiries.
