Where it came from
Time Travel Girl, titled Mari & Waka no 100-nen Kikō in Japan, was produced by the animation studio WAO World and aired in 2016. The series was conceptualized as an educational science-themed anime, following the protagonist Mari Hayase as she travels through history to meet various scientific innovators. Its production was deeply tied to the studio’s objective of blending traditional narrative anime tropes with digestible lessons on the history of technology and discovery.
The character designs were handled by the studio’s creative team to fit a modern, bright aesthetic intended to appeal to a younger audience. By showcasing historical figures like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison in a serialized format, the show aimed to humanize scientific progress. Upon its release, it was noted for its distinct focus on curriculum-based storytelling, occupying a niche space in the 2016 broadcast season as a series specifically designed to bridge the gap between historical biography and fantasy adventure.
