To Every You I’ve Loved Before

To Every You I've Loved Before, released in 2022 by BAKKEN RECORD, is a science fiction romance film adapted from Yomoji Otono's original light novel series. The narrative explores the existence of parallel worlds and the choices made across these realities, centering on a protagonist whose life diverges into different timelines based on his personal connections. The film was produced as part of a dual-release event alongside its sister film, To Me, the One Who Loved You, designed to reward viewers who navigate the order of watching to uncover the full emotional breadth of the interconnected plot.

Directed by Jun Matsumoto, the production sought to visually distinguish the varying realities through specific color palettes and distinct character designs that evolve alongside the lead's diverging life paths. Critics noted the film for its ambitious structure and the melancholic tone consistent with the source material's exploration of fate and regret. While the experimental nature of releasing two films simultaneously invited debate regarding the optimal viewing experience, the project remains a notable entry in modern Japanese animation for its intricate approach to high-concept romance and multiversal theory.
