Where it came from
To Love Ru, produced by studio Xebec and released in 2008, serves as a prominent example of the late-2000s harem and romantic comedy anime boom. Based on the manga series written by Saki Hasemi and illustrated by Kentaro Yabuki, the adaptation aimed to translate Yabuki's distinctively detailed and expressive character art into an animated format, focusing on the comedic misunderstandings between protagonist Rito Yuuki and the extraterrestrial princess Lala Satalin Deviluke.
The series reflects the industry trend of blending supernatural elements with classic high-school rom-com tropes. While the anime was noted for its slapstick humor and visual fidelity to the source material's character designs, it sparked wider discussions regarding the boundaries of fan service in mainstream broadcast animation during that period. Despite these debates, the franchise gained significant traction, leading to multiple sequels and OVA series that cemented its place as a staple of the genre.
