Toho Cinemas x Pokémon GO

The Toho Cinemas x Pokémon GO collaboration emerged in the mid-2010s as part of a strategic partnership between The Pokémon Company and the Japanese theater chain to integrate augmented reality gaming into physical cinema locations. Designed to increase foot traffic and leverage the immense popularity of the mobile game during its initial global surge, the initiative transformed numerous Toho locations into official Gyms or PokéStops. This integration served as a bridge between the immersive experience of feature-length Pokémon animation and the interactive nature of the Niantic platform.

The branding and interface elements for these locations were developed by the design teams at Niantic and The Pokémon Company, aiming to maintain visual consistency with the existing game assets while emphasizing the prestige of the Toho brand. The reception was largely positive among the core player base in Japan, who utilized the theaters as central hubs for community events and legendary raid battles. By embedding digital gameplay nodes into high-traffic public infrastructure, the collaboration successfully fostered a new type of location-based entertainment that complemented the theatrical releases of Pokémon films.
