Where it came from
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun is an anime television series produced by Studio Lerche that premiered in early 2020. Adapted from the ongoing manga series by AidaIro, the show centers on the supernatural mysteries of Kamome Academy, specifically the urban legend of Hanako-san of the Toilet. The production sought to capture the distinct, paper-like aesthetic and vibrant color palette of the original manga, resulting in a stylized visual identity that distinguishes it from many contemporary shonen adaptations.
The series was directed by Masaomi Ando, who aimed to preserve the artistic idiosyncrasies of AidaIro’s illustrations through expressive character animation and theatrical staging. Upon its release, the adaptation received attention for its unique art direction, which utilized a two-dimensional, storybook-inspired style to complement its blend of comedic school life and ghost-story themes. It has since become a notable entry in the supernatural school-fantasy genre.
