Where it came from
Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider was announced as a 2025 television project, emerging from the expansive creative partnership between Aniplex and Toei Company. The series represents a distinct tonal departure for the long-running Kamen Rider franchise, shifting focus from traditional heroic narratives to a character study centered on the deeply personal aspirations and fan culture surrounding the series. It reflects an ongoing effort by the studio to modernize the IP by exploring the meta-narrative of what it means to be a fan of such a legendary hero.
The production design prioritizes a grounded, contemporary aesthetic, aiming to contrast the grounded reality of the protagonist, Tojima, with the stylized, high-energy visuals associated with the Kamen Rider suits. By emphasizing a personal, human-scale story, the creative team aimed to resonate with long-time viewers who grew up with the franchise, focusing on the psychological impact of childhood hero-worship. Reception among fans has been characterized by curiosity regarding how the studio will balance this grounded approach with the franchise's historical reliance on action-oriented spectacle.
