Where it came from
Toki no Tabibito: Time Stranger was produced in 1986 by Kadokawa Shoten as a feature-length animated film directed by Mori Masaki. The project emerged during a vibrant period for Japanese animation in the mid-1980s, when publishing giant Kadokawa sought to leverage its literary holdings to capture the growing theatrical anime market. The film is based on the novel by Taku Mayumura, a prominent science fiction author known for blending speculative time-travel narratives with humanistic themes, and the studio intended for the film to serve as a prestige entry in their expanding portfolio of cinematic adaptations.
The film's visual identity was heavily influenced by the character designs of Moto Hagio, a seminal figure in the shōjo manga movement. Her involvement brought a distinctive, lyrical aesthetic to the production that diverged from the more aggressive mechanical designs prevalent in other 1980s sci-fi anime. While the film received moderate attention for its ambition and the pedigree of its creative team, it remains a notable example of the experimental collaborative spirit between Kadokawa's publishing division and the animation industry of the era.
