Where it came from
Tokyo Ghoul √A, released in 2015, serves as the second season of the anime adaptation based on the dark fantasy manga by Sui Ishida. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the series deviates from the original manga’s narrative trajectory, exploring an alternate storyline where the protagonist, Ken Kaneki, joins the radical ghoul organization Aogiri Tree. This creative departure was intended to provide a unique perspective on the established lore, though it remains a subject of debate among the franchise's fanbase regarding its divergence from the source material.
The production design focuses on the somber, urban aesthetic characteristic of the series, emphasizing the visceral transformation of Kaneki and the psychological toll of the conflict between humans and ghouls. Studio Pierrot utilized a muted color palette and intense character animation to reflect the show's gritty tone. While the series received mixed reviews due to its pacing and the aforementioned narrative shifts, it remains a significant installment in the Tokyo Ghoul franchise, notable for its distinct artistic direction and soundtrack.
