Where it came from
Tokyo 24th Ward was produced by CloverWorks and released as an original anime television series in early 2022. The project was conceived as an ambitious entry into the science fiction genre, exploring themes of surveillance, ethics, and morality within a fictionalized artificial island in Tokyo Bay. It aimed to challenge viewers by presenting a complex narrative where protagonists must make impossible moral choices to protect their community, reflecting contemporary anxieties surrounding technology and political governance.
The series was directed by Naokatsu Tsuda, who sought to blend character-driven drama with a high-stakes thriller atmosphere. The production featured character designs by Shiro Masamune, a prominent artist known for his seminal work in the cyberpunk genre, including Ghost in the Shell. Despite the pedigree of its creative team, the series received a polarized reception, with many critics pointing to the difficulty of balancing its dense thematic ambitions with the pacing requirements of a single-cour television format.
