Tonari no Onigiri-kun

Tonari no Onigiri-kun originated as part of Studio Ghibli's collaborative promotional initiatives, designed to capture the whimsical, everyday charm synonymous with the studio's aesthetic. Created to bring the gentle sensibilities of Hayao Miyazaki's animation style into the tangible world of Japanese comfort food, the character design serves as a personification of the ubiquitous rice ball. It reflects the studio's long-standing interest in highlighting the quiet beauty of humble, everyday objects.

The character was developed with the signature Ghibli emphasis on organic forms and expressive, minimalist features, echoing the visual language seen in works like My Neighbor Totoro. It was received as a delightful piece of lifestyle merchandising, designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth. While it functions primarily as a character-led promotional piece, it is held in high regard by enthusiasts of Ghibli’s design philosophy, representing the studio's ability to infuse simple, functional items with a distinct sense of personality and heart.
